Coventry city

Coventry city is the eleventh largest city in Great Britain and is located in the West Midlands region of England. Coventry has had a long and turbulent history, and is known as the world’s first twin city. It is twinned with both Volgograd and more famously Dresden as both Coventry city and Dresden were bombed to near complete destruction during the Second World War.

Coventry city suffered extremely heavy bombing during the war years and this explains why the town displays such a high level of modern post war architecture, due to the extensive rebuilding that occurred after the war. However Coventry city is famed for the ruined Cathedral, some of which still stands, that was heavily damaged during the war and is now maintained as hallowed ground and as a site of remembrance to those who died during the war. However Coventry city is famed for more than just being destroyed during the war, there is a great deal more history surrounding Coventry city, for example of Coventry’s most famous residents was Lady Godiva and a statue in her honour stands in the city centre. Other famous former residents of Coventry City include the ska band ‘The Specials’ who wrote their most famous hit Ghost Town about Coventry city.

Coventry city was also once a major centre of industry in the UK and numerous motorcar and motorcycle companies and manufacturers were based in Coventry city in the past, however the motor industry in Coventry city has dwindled somewhat in recent years, although the famous London Black Taxicabs are still produced there.
